Progress toward establishing a Sister Parish program with San Isidro Labrador (St. Isadore the Laborer) in Luperon, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic has continued to move forward with an oversight committee established separate from the Social Concerns Committee which originally promoted the project. Their first order of business is to draw up the official agreement between our two parishes with goals and expectations laid out. When the partnership is successfully established, representatives from the St. Mary Magdalene Sister Parish Committee (SMMSPC) will approach members of appropriate ministries within our own church to encourage them to take part in the Sister Parish program by formulating ways in which their ministries can participate in the spiritual and cultural exchanges which make up the main mission of a parish partnership. We also encourage any member of SMM to suggest spiritual or cultural projects or exchanges that they feel would move solidarity and understanding forward with San Isidro Labrador.
While we have 6-8 members who have expressed interest in standing on this committee, we extend the invitation to more participation by our faith community. We have a special need for persons fairly fluent in both English and Spanish to translate communications between our parishes. This position could easily be done at home at the volunteer’s discretion. If you would like more information about Sister Parish programs, would like to answer the call to stewardship by volunteering to join our Sister Parish committee, or suggest exchange projects please call Mary Gordon at 715 258-8439 or email her at
