Twenty Eighth Sunday
The parish church was badly in need of repair. So, the pastor called a special meeting to raise funds. At the assembly, the pastor explained the need of an emergency fund for plastering the roof and supporting pillars and for carrying out other items of repair. He invited the congregation to pledge contributions. After a brief pause, Mr. Murphy, the richest man in the parish, volunteered to give 50 dollars. Just as he sat down, a hunk of plaster fell from the ceiling on his head. He jumped up, looked terribly startled and said: “I meant to say 500 dollars.” The congregation stood silent and stunned. Then a lone voice cried out from the back: “Oh Lord, hit him again!”
Dear Friends,
We are blessed with so many good gifts. When you look around the world, you can really see how blessed we are than less privileged people.
Today’s readings remind us of our blessings and how can we follow Jesus by giving up certain things in our life.
In the first reading, Solomon sought and preferred wisdom to riches. God has given the wisdom because he was ready to give up all the riches, throne and scepter. He loved wisdom more then anything else because of the combinations.
In the second reading, we understand the real work of the word of God. It has all the characters for any man. It is living and effective, cuts to the soul, body and spirit and touches the heart. It penetrates human mind. No creature concealed. See how powerful the word of God is.
The young man who has many possessions thinks he is blessed. Enthusiastically he approaches Jesus, asking what we must do to gain eternal life. He hopes to gain admiration from God because of his following of the commandments from childhood. What he hears from Jesus is a shocker. He is invited to sell his possessions, give them to the poor and follow Jesus. Jesus does not ask this of every follower. It is because, looking at the earnest young man Jesus loved him. Love for him makes Jesus reveal the secret of the kingdom of God, the key to true joy and lasting peace. Jesus asks him to make a radical choice to love, which one does not know of accommodation and compromise.
The young man fails to measure up the greatest challenges of his life because he thought following the commandments is the right thing and was not worried about anything. Jesus asked him to look beyond. Jesus has used the apt examples to the disciples the about riches and how to give them up. Jesus talks about the give and take.
Jesus has been very clear about discipleship from the beginning. It is a dying to self, a carrying of the cross after him. Salvation is not cheap grace. I do not want a simple finish, like a choice between the kingdom of God and money. In that young mans’ life money was the stumbling block.
Riches signify so many things. Think about what we have written on our money bills, “IN GOD WE TRUST.” What does it mean? Do we trust in God? or money?
Think about things that become the stumbling blocks for us to follow Jesus. The superficiality, power, proud self-sufficiency, our unnecessary gossip, the utter inequality in the use of the earth’s goods, not being open to the Holy Spirit, hatred, jealousy, selfish ambition and so on.
St. Paul says in Galatians 5: 16- 17 “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” (kindly read Galatians 5: 16 -25).
Let us ask these questions:
• What is the one thing Jesus is asking me to give up today which is a stumbling block to follow Jesus?
• Am I ready to give up?
• What do I prefer in my life as a Catholic? Follow the Golden Rule: Luke 6:31. Do to others, as you would have them do to you.
