St. Mary Magdalene has a new Comfort Ministry that is active as of January 1, 2014. The purpose of this ministry is to address the parishioners that have lost a loved one and would benefit from some support from St. Mary Magdalene.

The local funeral homes, both in Waupaca and Iola, will fill out a Ministry of Comfort information sheet that will be returned to the parish. At that time a contact person will be assigned. This minister of comfort will meet with a family member before the visitation and explain the process. The family will be given a yellow rose and a comfort cross. The purpose of the comfort cross is to pick it up and place it in the palm of your hand and say a brief prayer for the deceased. The oils from your hands, as it is used in prayer, will become the finish. This cross will be given to the family to provide comfort and support in the days to come.

The family’s comfort minister will continue to make contact over the period of a year both with an occasional card and phone call unless more is deemed necessary. The parish staff will be available for support to ministers of comfort if they feel them or the family need additional attention.

Anyone who is interested in becoming a comfort minister is invited to attend a Comfort Ministry meeting Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 6:30 pm in the spirit room at the church. The time requirement is minimal and the need is great.
