Sixth Sunday in ordinary time
A bus full of ugly people had a head on collision with a truck. When they died, God granted all of them one wish. The first person said, "I want to be gorgeous." God snapped his fingers and it happened. The second person said the same thing and God did the same thing. This went on and on throughout the group. God noticed the last man in line was laughing hysterically. By the time God got to the last ten people, the last man was laughing and rolling on the ground. When the man's turn came, he laughed and said, "I wish they were all ugly again."
Dear Friends, every one of us wants to be happy in this world while we live. We try to do different things to make ourselves happier.
Today’s readings give us some ways and means to be happier. It comes with do’s and don’ts for our life.
The first reading from the book of Jeremiah gives the true difference of a man who trusts in God or not. He gives a sharp contrast between blessings and curses. There is dryness in people who don’t believe in God. They stay in the wilderness. One who trusts the Lord will bear the fruit. Relying on God is the need of the hour. We need human support for our relationship, but we cannot solely rely on human alone. We need God in our life. That is the blessing as Christians. The responsorial psalm supports the first reading how we are blessed and the results of it.
St. Paul in the second reading says that if Christ has not been raised, our faith is vain. Christ has blessed us all through his resurrection.
Today’s Gospel teach us that true happiness or beatitude, lies in the awareness of whom we are and what we are supposed to do. They remind us that we are all children of a loving Heavenly Father. We will be happy in this world and in Heaven only when we share our blessings with our brothers and sisters in need and work to lift them up.
Beatitude, which means blessedness. Blessedness has two meanings; enjoying God’s favor and enjoying true happiness. In the Gospel today, Luke talks about both blessedness and woes. I am sure if you go through the Gospel of Luke, you will see a lot of difference than other Gospels’. He gives more importance to the poor. We can see that in Mary’s ‘Magnificat’. According to Luke’s gospel and in the scripture, God has a special place for the poor. They were looked as “Anawim” of the poor of Yahweh. They did not have authority and power.
Luke tries to give us what we need to be a good Christian in reaching out to people who are in real need. Human beings are inter-dependent. Pope Francis talks about accompaniment. It is not a program. It is interpersonal and organic, moving pace of relationship according to other’s needs. Luke talks of reaching out to people through our faith and actions.
In the Old Testament, we hear many blessings. If you do this, you will be blessed and so on. In the New Testament, Jesus brings a kind of sacrifice of life or things to reach out blessedness. Here is where we need to depend on God for His mercy and love. People who think about ourselves will not look at other people. They become self -oriented.

How do we reach out to people?
What is my level of trust in God? Are we able to trust God in our suffering and pain?
Read the book of Job in the Bible.
